Giuseppe Verdi was born in a small village Roncole, Italy in 1813, and passed away in Milan in early 1901. Considered a leading figure in Italian music, he composed twenty-six operas and hundreds of choral works which were, as Julian Budden wrote, “the epitome of Romantic drama and passion.” Unlike German leading Richard Wagner with his highly chromatic melodies and harmonic settings, Verdi liked to portray characters, emotions, and scenarios with relatively simple musical language, such as rounded binary form and easily memorable melodies, creating an accessible geniality for his audiences. Luisa Miller was conceived in 1844, accomplished by the end of September in 1849, and premiered on December 8th 1849 at Teatro San Carlo (Royal …show more content…

The main character named Rodolfo, a Count's son, falls in love with a girl named Luisa, a veteran's daughter. Because of the large difference in social hierarchy between them, Rodolfo's father doesn't want his son to marry Luisa and plans to marry Rodolfo instead to a rich and influential Duchess Federica who grows up with Rodolfo. However, Rodolfo holds firm. He goes to Luisa’s home and kneels down in front of the veteran, her father, to beg for permission to marry her. At the same time, Rodolfo's father breaks into the room and later sends the veteran to prison after fighting with him. Thus, in order to rescue her father, Luisa writes a letter suggested by Wurm, a courtier of Rodolfo's father who also loves Luisa. Wurm tells her that if she acknowledges in the letter that the only reason she wants marry Rodolfo is his money and prestige and that her real lover is Wurm, her father will be emancipated; if not, then he will be executed. Luisa does what Wurm says, but later the letter is brought out to show Rodolfo how frivolous Luisa is, leading him to believe that she has betrayed him. Unfortunately, Rodolfo believes the letter and falls into an abyss of extreme desperation. Worse, the Count (Rodolfo’s father) tries to use this moment to persuade Rodolfo to marry the duchess. He pretends to accept this marriage but also prepares to

The Effects of Parental Neglect or Death on Children The Lady Matador’s Hotel presents several characters, all of whom meet by chance and intersect each other’s lives, leaving them forever changed. Each of these characters had stories and lives before meeting one another; most of whom continued to write their stories after they had gone their separate ways. What each of these people had in common, regardless of what kind of lifestyle they lived or the background they came from, was that they were all betrayed or left without a family member, whether it be a parent or spouse or their children. The impact that each betrayal had on the characters lives and how they dealt with different situations in them was significant to the plot of the book.…

This scene was particularly revolting, but it suggests that the Commandant may have been her child’s father, despite the Count’s supposed admission to impregnating her. At first, it isn’t clear why Kleist would put such a seemingly unnecessary amount of random, explicit detail (when he usually is so elusive in his wording, suggesting sexual assaults in dashes) into this relatively unimportant part. When approaching back to this scene a second time, it became essential to try to overcome the repulsion and understand his purpose in this inclusion of detail. It is important to note that, not only did this go against the tide of his usual brevity of prose, but it was abrupt. One minute, Giulietta’s father was fuming in the other room, having vehemently disowned and nearly shot her.…

The Shunammite Death is a horrible and sometimes an awful experience that is never an easy thing, especially for the loved ones affected by it, and in this story Luisa was directly affected by the dying lustful days or should I say years of her uncle’s life. Some people believe death should be a celebration and is in a sense of out with the old and in with the new but that is not what happened in this story. What seemed to be just the dying days of her uncle turned into just more than that since she was pressured into marrying him so she could inherit all of his belongings. The setting is a major influence since it is placed in the uncle’s house that has a weird feeling to it and not like summer. The themes through the story were death and lust since…

There have been many successful and unsuccessful attempts at adapting Shakespeare’s works into opera. Though modern composers such as Benjamin Britten and Thomas Adès have set Shakespeare’s original words to music, with few changes if any, the most famous operatic adaptations over time have proved to be Giuseppe Verdi’s Otello and Macbeth. In these works, Verdi manages to keep the intent of Shakespeare and the overall plot of the play, yet molds the details of the story to be more suitable for the opera house. However, in between the composing of these two opera’s, he sought to put another of Shakespeare’s masterpieces to music: King Lear. There are several questions I will address in my paper about the failed production of a Verdian King…
