Giuseppe Garibaldi was an Italian military leader during the Italian Unification. He grew up to become a sailor and sailed across the world on many voyages where he met Giuseppe Mazzini and that is how he discovered he wanted to help Italy (Arieti). He fought and sailed in South America which is how he became famous (Arieti). After he sailed in South America, he returned to Italy to fight against the Austrians. Garibaldi was also not welcomed by the Austrians and after fighting them he left again, but later returned to finish unifying Italy (Arieti). Meanwhile, Italy was separated into several different provinces. The north and south were very different and the only thing the two had in common was the fact that they had the church in Rome (“Transcript”).
