The booklet “Girt by Sea” was written by Mungo McCullum speaks upon the refugees entering Australia and the battle between the politics. From my personal view, I feel refugees have the right to come to Australia to seek safety. Throughout the sections "The Boat People of 1881”, The Abuse of Innocence","Wongs, Whites and Reffos" and "The Big Lie”, Mungo McCullum uses strong points and persuasive techniques to shift the views of his readers. I feel Mungo uses strong points and writing technique throughout his book.

As John Howard became Prime Minister, more events had started to occur around refugees. This section of the book brings the readers back to the Program, Four Corners. Ruddock had interfered with Shayan and his family's privacy. Ruddock attacks Shanyan and his parents by writing false information that Shanyans father Mohammed was a violent terrorist and that he had spent two years in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. Mungo uses this information to help persuade readers that not everything in the media is true. Mungo uses a formal and comfortable tone to help gain his readers attention. Mungo continues to mention Shanyan and his family being again attack by Shayans Condition. Mungo uses strong words such as strangers to confront the viewers of what Ruddock was trying to achieve. “Ruddock’s solution to the Shanyan problem was to say that the could be removed from Villawood and placed in the care of strangers” (Page 8).
