Girls State Narrative Report

Improved Essays
Although there were many, my most memorable Girls State memory by far was running for office. I ran for state Attorney General. Attaining the position of a state office is extremely challenging at Girl’s State. If you chose to run for a state office, like I did, you have to campaign against 400 other girls. I had to go through many different interviews, including a “rapid fire” Q&A session. It was exhilarating! Although the entire process was extremely nerve-wracking, I enjoyed every moment of it. I loved meeting people, making posters in my room with my roommate, campaigning, and all of the questions I would get. Therefore, the whole adventure of campaigning for a high office was my most memorable experience at Girls State.

The interview on "The Remarkable Story of the Battle to Integrate Little Rock's Central High School,” was heartbreaking to watch. This interview is the hard to envision that a child had to endure such horrible treatment. There are a couple of things that really disturbed me about how President Dwight D. Eisenhower responded by sending in soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division to Little Rock's Central High School to make sure the 9 students would be able to integrate with the other students. My heart broke when Melba Pattillo Beals explained being 15 years old and having to run for her life because adults, wanted to hang her and they were actually chasing her and her mother. When she said for the first time in her life her mother slapped her…

Review of Howard’s “Students as Storytellers: Teaching Rhetorical Strategies through Folktales” In the NCTE journal, Teaching English in the Two-Year College, PhD student Jeffrey Howard published a fascinating article titled “Students as Storytellers: Teaching Rhetorical Strategies through Folktales.” In the article, Howard explains how he was able to captivate students with an assignment that gave them the creative license to reinvent a popular fairytale, Little Red Riding Hood, all while asking students to explore and develop rhetorical strategies in their composition. The article shows the value of using literature in the composition classroom as well as how the practically universal texts of fairytales can reach students of almost…

A new journey in my life began on August 13th, 2014 as my school principal cut the red ribbon celebrating the opening of a brand new high school. Little did I know, it would become a journey of growth and unique experiences unlike any before it, further refining and adding to my inner sculpture of identity and talent. I was going to Liberty High School, therefore it was necessary that I adapt--quickly, yet strategically. Throughout my life, I had never imagined that my high school experience would reach and exceed my expectations in the way that it did. I had the unique opportunity most people don’t get in life: to be part of a grassroots movement in establishing a culture that would enrich future students with tradition and values for many years to come.…

The Sweet Girl Graduate by Sarah Curzon focuses on this specific representation of gender where the heroine of the play is attempting to comply to societal norms by cross-dressing in order to receive a higher education. The heroine is obliging to the gender hierarchy that exists, and as a result, this portrays the heroine as someone who is attempting to break away from male dominance, while at the same time accepting it as women were expected to. The representation of gender roles in The Sweet Girl Graduate creates a contradictory perception of what women are meant to achieve in the play, and this is due to the portrayal of the heroine as a free individual; however, at the same time she is subjected to follow the status quo forced…
