Aunt Alexandra came into Maycomb county to help Atticus with the children and especially Scout because Jem told Scout that “You know she’s not used to girls’ said Jem, ‘least-ways not girls like you. She’s trying to make you a lady (Lee 302).” Aunt Alexandra wants to help Scout into becoming more of a young lady because when Aunt Alexandra had her meeting with the other women in town she said that Scout should stay and be with women who are like her. Aunt Alexandra is always around girls who are educated and dress like girls by wearing dresses and skirts instead of wearing overalls. Aunt Alexandra wants to change Scout’s attitude and as well as her physical appearance into becoming more of a lady. Calpurnia believes that it is not very lady like if there are girls that act like boys with their attitude and their actions. Calpurnia has been with Jem and Scout ever since they were little kids and Calpurnia knows how Scout acts like and it is not very lady-like. Calpurnia is punishing Scout because she has behaved in a misconduct way and she told Scout “It’s not lady-like-in the second place, folks don’t like to have somebody around knowin’ more than they do (Lee 167).” Calpurnia also does not act very lady like when she is with the black community because since they do not have good of an education like white people do, they do not know how to talk as well as them or read or write. Calpurnia does not want Scout to start talking like that because the people will misjudge Scout of a lady and will not show respect towards her. Calpurnia does not want that to happen because she wants Scout to become a bright and intelligent
