As a participant in the Girls on the Run program as a fourth, fifth, and sixth grader, I was taught the value of a strong support system during difficult times as well as how to express gratitude and love towards others as they face struggles in their own lives. Through community service projects, I learned that I could be a contributing member of my community and that I could choose to have an impact on the world around me. It is during adolescence that females enter a stage of fragility and sensitivity; they are easily molded by internal and external loci of control as they discover their unique personalities and experience blossoming individualism. Role models can positively impact the molding process by setting examples of physical, social, academic, and spiritual success. Observation of such qualities may cause youth to gravitate towards a balanced and healthy lifestyle. By implementing positive life lessons in the form of a curriculum or a simple conversation, role models have the ability to evoke personal growth through self-insight while also revealing and reversing a young girl’s negative rumination. Although my impact on the world as a whole has gone unnoticed, I have the satisfaction of knowing that I am an inspiration for girls who, in turn, will positively impact those around
