The letters N and M represent ‘name’ and ‘names’ respectively. In the context of the novel N and M were two German spies, one male and the other female. These ‘enemies within’ pose a serious threat to Britain as they pose as ordinary citizens. The Intelligence service appoints two spies, Tommy and Tuppance Beresford to track down these Nazis from guests at a seaside hotel- Sans Souci. This happens after WWII where Tommy and Tuppance feel useless and sidelined. There is another British Intelligence who was following these N and M. Towards the end of the story the British agent kills N as he threatened Tuppance’s life.
This book clearly brings out the theme of gender and the enemy within as represented by the casts. Miss Christie brings out women in, N or M, as very significant role players in spying and providing emotional support to men. For example as portrayed by Tuppence insisting to go with Tommy on the mission where he is the only one approached. Miss Christie brings out the women in most of her work as heroine.
