I am applying for a recommendation to be interview for Girls Nation 2017. It would be interesting to go to Girls Nation and learn about the innerworkings of the United States government in a close-up, hands-on way. The more one knows about the government and how it works, they can make more educated decisions on the officials they are electing to run this great and powerful nation. I feel it would be a wonderful way to broaden my horizons, to learn more about the government, and to spend time with girls who express the same kind of interest.

Beauty matters. Well, at least for some. From the clothes you choose to wear (and the ones you don’t) to the items you own, everything surrounding you changes how people perceive you, even things completely out of someone’s control. Pressures to adhere to societal norms can cause long-term harm for certain people, but others can take this concept in stride. Due to different upbringings, along with different environmental influences, it allows for a range of perspectives.…

South Asian women feel the pressure to take on the “good mother” role because of the lack of support they have. It is evident that South Asian women lack support, however they need assistance in finding appropriate coping strategies with stress at home (George & Ramkissoon, 1998, p.115). South Asian families have strong emotional ties and have dependency among parents, children and siblings (Elliot, 1996, as cited in George & Ramkissoon, 1998, p.114). A lot of South Asian households have generations of a family living together this is for economic and cultural reasons (George & Ramkissoon,1998, p.114). As an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America, I have the opportunity to work with youth and help to develop social, technical, and leadership skills. Over the summer of 2106, I had the privilege to serve as a STEM instructor for our local Cub Scout Resident Camp. There, I taught cub scouts about advanced subjects such as forces, robotics, and engineering which inspired them to consider careers in the STEM field. In addition to acting as an instructor, my position as Song Crew Leader put me in front of the 150+ youth in attendance allowing me to serve as a role model for the cub scouts. The opportunity to talk with youth and adults alike allowed me to share my own knowledge and experiences while being able to learn about their own experiences…

Throughout my years of high school, I have been involved in numerous volunteer opportunities that have given me different experiences. I have done everything from sitting outside Walmart in 10 degree weather in mid December raising money for UNICEF, to laughing while playing connect four with senior citizens in local nursing homes. However, one of the most meaningful things I have done has been volunteering in my town’s VFW post. My passion for helping those at the VFW stemmed from my entrance into the National Honor Society, and since then, it has grown to be one of my favorite volunteer activities. Girl Scouts has been an important part of my life since I can remember. Girl Scouts helped me to learn to be practical, independent, strong, and most importantly, a leader. Put simply, Girl Scouts has molded me into the extremely driven person I am today. So you can imagine the shock and dismay I felt when my troop disbanded earlier this year. Though we were all members of the highest level of Girl Scouts as a girl could be, I thought the troop would remain intact until I went to college.…
