For my observation, I decided to go to Macy’s, a large department store in Coronado Mall. I entered Macy’s from the first floor of the mall, where their makeup and perfume section is prominently displayed. Almost all the cashiers in the makeup and perfume department were female, except for one man. Behind the makeup department are women’s clothes, lined with racks of sale items. In this interpretation paper, I wanted to talk about “On American Motherhood” the speech President Theodore Roosevelt gave to the National Congress of Mothers in March 13, 1905. Relationships with others and growing awareness of societal values help children and people build a sense of who they are and the societal roles available to them. Societal pressures and parental influences are more helpful than harmful. Authors Kenji Yoshino and Jayme Poisson discuss in their articles how people are trying to change societal views by challenging them and introducing new and scary situations. Poisson describes an extreme case of parenting to end covering due to societal norms. My mother and I did not share a typical mother/daughter relationship. There was a time when we would not even speak and years would pass before I would even see her again. However, I would always see her when I looked into the mirror, since I looked just like her. Alison Bechdel’s “The Ordinary Devoted Mother” illustrates the hardships that Bechdel faces in both writing the memoir and her everyday life revolving around writing. As we see her writing this memoir, we also see the things that impact her such as her interest in psychoanalysis and dreams. As Bechdel puts it, “You can’t live and write at the same time” (79).
