The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, is a play in which a reverend discovers a group of young girls dancing in the woods. The townspeople catch wind and start rumors of witchcraft when a girl named Betty falls into a coma after the dancing. All the while, a man named John Proctor is having an affair with his housekeeper, a woman named Abigail Williams who was also part of the group dancing in the woods. Abigail attempts to hide the reason she was in the woods: to cast a charm that she believed would kill Elizabeth Proctor, John’s wife. After John ends the affair Abigail accuses numerous people of witchcraft to keep the charm hidden from the townspeople, only to steal her uncle’s money and run off to Boston. John Proctor is eventually hanged
