Girlforward Reflective Essay

Over my time at GirlForward, I had experiences that caused me to learn about education policy, being an educator, ESL and refugee students and nonprofit’s work. To start off with, the purpose of this internship was to learn about educational policy in a real-world context. At the beginning of the semester, I was nervous about how much I was going to learn about educational policy at a place that I had been at for a year in the education division. While I may not have learned a lot about educational policy on a national level, I learned how educational policy can be implemented at a small level in a nonprofit. I was very lucky that GirlForward and specifically, Emily and Ashley, allowed me to pursue my interest in math education at GirlForward. …show more content…
In Loyola’s Teaching and Learning program, there is a lot of emphasis placed on schools being community centers. There is not an explicit educational policy that states that teachers should be working to get as many parents involved and different community organizations tied into the school, but it’s an expectation in Teaching and Learning. At GirlForward, I saw how GirlForward works with schools and teachers to advocate for the girls and be a resource for refugee families and ESL students. While there is not a specific law about partnerships between schools and community resources, part of policy is principles and a valuable principle is working together to create safe spaces and learning opportunities for all students. Tying my learning from GirlForward to my coursework this semester was something that enhanced my own learning and …show more content…
Since I have been there for a while, I witnessed the shifts that have taken place. From the first rearrangement of desks into cubicles to the first firing of a staff member, I watched GirlForward slowly move away from grassroots to a corporate style climate. Throughout the shifts, I reflected on my role and shifted my own concept of what my role at GirlForward was. When I started, I was one of many interns and I was the odd one out with a special project. The other interns did calls and mentoring logs and other tasks that ran GirlForward’s day to day operation. Then, GirlForward hired Sanj and Emily R. and now Jay. This past semester, about half of all the interns were special projects because the day to day operations had staff members. Interns are now being used to facilitate greater growth and next semester, only a couple of interns are being taken on who have special projects that fit a need of GirlForward. It’s been challenging working to fit into how GirlForward climate has shifted and watch what it was doing to the staff members. Divisions happened between directors and engagement specialists and there an animosity between the staff and the board developed that I had not seen before. I counted my role as not choosing sides and being neutral and not engaging in idle gossip which was also difficult because I then felt like there was camaraderie among interns and their respective boss which was not

During this summer session of ENGL101A, I have learned multiple ways to express myself through my writing. In fact, before signing up for this class, I did not know the proper way to compose an academic essay for a particular audience, and how to properly cite my sources. Nevertheless, after the short summer session, I am able to define my purpose and audience, analyze critically any piece of information, and write with proper citations and fewer grammatical errors with confidence. Through the short time of 5 weeks, I learned how to focus on my audience as well as how to define the purpose of my papers as academically as possible.…

Introduction Throughout the Spring 2016 semester, students were expected to volunteer at the Oasis Católico Santa Rafaela tutoring program, which located in a primarily Hispanic community with the goal of serving its local residents by tutoring children to put them on the same educational footing as native English speakers. During this volunteer work, I was exposed to challenges that I was wholly unaware of in a community that is far more underserved than I realized. I will discuss what I observed educationally from the students that I worked with and how those observations carried over from topics discussed in the course of the Education 2013 curriculum. Furthermore, I discuss some of the unique challenges faced by the “first-generation”…

As a first-generation Latina student, I was significantly influenced by the Student Affairs staff at my undergraduate institution. When I arrived to Ramapo College I realized I was not prepared for college-level work, if it was not for the Educational Opportunity Fund Program I would have felt lost and would have struggled both academically and financially. My mother did not have the opportunity to graduate from high school or earn her GED because she had to work at a young age to help my grandmother in the Dominican Republic. Seeing my mother’s leadership, work ethic, and sacrifices gives me the fuel to one day have a better life by earning my Masters degree and making a difference in my community. My family immigrated from Mexico to cultivate the crops of California and now I am able to pursue my dream. While attending public high school, I appeared as a low-income Mexican American high schooler living in a poor socioeconomic town, dominated by Mexicans. However, a mix of my intellectual curiosity and historical roots from the Gonzalez and Villanueva family differed me from the rest of the students in the Central Valley. Growing up, I constantly wondered why my public high school was not academically pushing me. I knew that in order to succeed, I needed to expand my horizons academically.…

Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…

Before even entering high school, I made a decision that would ruin the next few years. Looking back, I had no idea it would have impacted me as much as it did, but even now I still wouldn’t have changed that decision. Everything that came after that decision, no matter how difficult, shaped me into who I am today, and I was able to meet some pretty amazing people and do a few things only a handful of people can say they’ve done. In elementary school, I was in the S.C.O.P.E.
