GIRL, INTERRUPTED Girl, Interrupted. To some it's a brilliant novel for psychology major students, to others it’s an intriguing film from the 20th century. But why is this book so loved? Susanna Kaysen was a 18 year old girl that was admitted to McLean Hospital to be treated for borderline personality disorder and depression. It was very important for her to be admitted because someone with suicidal tendencies should be helped. She said she was “stuck in the music of seventeen” (Kaysen, 3) Growing up, Susana's mother was emotionally abusive towards her, which can oftentimes lead up to suicidal thoughts and psychological disorders, hence why Susanna has BPD. The people she met during this time opened up Susana's eyes a great deal. These patients all had a story, and an interesting one. Lisa, being one of them. She is analyzed as a sociopath. (sparknotes.com) She occasionally escapes from the doctor's facility, but is always found a day or so later. She is typically a happy person,but when she is caught after escaping she puts up a fight with the staff. She is an ex-addict who doesn’t sleep and never eats, and maliciously loves bothering the staff. She clearly takes a lot of pride in her determination. In spite of the fact that she has a therapist, she never actually sees him. Lisa is not in contact with her family aside from her sibling. Keeping in mind that she can be kind hearted, she is definitely two faced. 1.2% of Americans suffer from Schizophrenia. This disease is chronic. “Schizophrenia is characterized by thoughts or experiences that seem out of touch with reality, disorganized speech or behavior, and decreased participation in daily activities. Difficulty with concentration and memory may also be present.” (NIMH) There are still studies going on trying to figure out exactly what this is. Depression. Seen as a sadness disease by many but sadly it could be worse. Major depression is a “brain disorder characterized by persistently depressed mood or loss of interest in activities, causing significant impairment in daily life.” (webmv) MDD is extremely common, affecting more than 3 million people in the US alone. Depression could be fatal, causing a victim to be suicidal or even homicidal. Borderline Personality Disorder is a disorder in which Susana has. BPD cannot be cured, could be lifelong and could be fatal. BPD is a cousin to depression, but much more fatal. Actually, many insane serial killers have been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. To name a few, David Berkowitz, Ed Gein, Jeffrey Dahmer, Richard Chase, Aileen Wuornos, David Gonzalez, Albert Fish, and Kenneth Bianchi. BPD has the same symptoms as MDD.
