Girl, Interrupted takes place in the late 1960s. Susanna Kaysen, the main character of the movie, is sent to a mental institution where she is diagnosed with a disorder that will soon change her perspective of herself. This institution reveals an entirely different world to her of many people including the unique and influential, Lisa. Here she questions her sanity and who she really is. In the words of Susanna, is she crazy or is she just “interrupted”? It is presented that Susanna is diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder due to her instability in self-direction and relationships, impulsivity, and co-occurring symptoms of other disorders.
The DSM-V states that for one to meet the diagnosis for Borderline Personality Disorder the patient should show “a pervasive pattern of instability of interpersonal relationships, self-image, and affects..” In other words, the patient will show signs of the inability to maintain and begin relationships. In the movie, Susanna has engaged in several acts of what is called casual sex but afterward, she tends to lose interest in her partner or refuses to let the relationships escalate to more intimate level. For example, Susanna begins a relationship with a man named Tobia Jacobs. Once she is sent to the institution he comes to visit her before he is sent off for war and offers to take her away from the institution and spend his life with her.
