Girl, Interrupted is a 1999 film starring Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie about a women’s 18-month stay in a mental institution. The film takes place in the late 1960’s and focuses around a main character by the name of Susanna Kaysen. The following summary was written with help from the American Mental Health Foundation website (2013) and Wikipedia (n.d.). In the beginning of the film we learn that Susanna Kaysen had attempted suicide by overdosing, having taken an entire bottle of aspirin followed by a bottle of vodka. Susanna is checked into Claymore, a psychiatric hospital near where she lives. Once admitted, Susanna quickly befriends fellow patients Polly, Georgina, Daisy, Janet, and Cynthia. She is the most captivated by Lisa Rowe, a patient who is diagnosed as a sociopath. Susanna is easily influenced by Lisa, who encourages her to stop taking her medicine and/or trade it, sneak out of her room at night, and resist therapy.
After many impulsive adventures and constantly breaking rules, RN of the ward, gets tired of their antics and refers them to the therapist, Dr. Wick. Susanna tries to shut Dr. Wick out with a cold attitude; in response to her attitude, the doctor takes her in as her patient and Susanna is diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. Lisa also visits Dr. Wick but she does not return to the ward and Susanna falls into a depression. Lisa returns, and she and Susanna break out of Claymore.
