After reading “A&P” by John Updike and “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid there is so many things that can to be talked about. Both stories come to a point where they are alike in many ways, but they differ from one another also. Similarities can be found throughout these both stories, elements are theme, character, author, and feeling.
In “A&P” there is a young man who is a cashier, and focuses on three girls that walk into the store. He describes what they are wearing, and criticizes how they look. There is also a mother in “Girl” who explains and criticizes her daughter about every little thing that she does and seems wrong to

In “Girl” by Jamaica, the mother shows her daughter what is right and mannerly for her. As in “A&P” the young man thinks about the girls in a lustful way which is the opposite way that female characters feel about. (pg.47) the mother in “Girl” states:” This is how you set a table for dinner with an important guest.” This is how the mother gives her daughter instructions for chores the way they should be done. It gives a hint how the mother feels and what she expects from her daughter. In “A&P” (pg.18) the boy gives a feeling on how he see things in his own way, he states: “The one that caught my eye first was the one in the plaid green two-piece.” This is where readers get their first hint that the story is written from the cahier’s perspective. He goes on to describe what he thinks about each girl as he watches then …show more content…

In 1965 she was sent to Westchester County, New York, to work as an au pair (or “servant” as she prefers to describe it). Basically, her family was against her writing and decided to send her to Westchester to become a servant. As Jamaica gives an interview she says “Jamaica Kincaid: Oh, at a certain point my own writing is not so interesting to me. I’ve read it; I wrote it; and I wanted to do something that was unusual. It’s literature. And Paradise Lost is a complicated poem. I found in it—as a 7-year-old it formed very much my feelings about tyranny and about injustice—simplified, because the poem is very complicated. I just wanted to read something that would not be what was expected. I tend to do that in my writing. I was almost sure people wanted me to read from my writing, but I never give people what they want.” She explains how she felt in writing at a young age wanting to do something extraordinary with

Society has set and shaped standards causing women to have their own type of cultural rules to follow based off of their sexual impurity. When dealing with the same issue concerning men, it’s treated in a different way due to the fact that men had more power and received anything they would demand.…
