Giovanni da Verrazzano was an Italian explorer of North America in the services of King Francis I of France. He was well known for the exploration and chartering the Atlantic Coast between the Carolinas and Newfoundland including the New York Harbor in 1524.
Giovanni da Verrazzano was born in the south of Florence in Italy to Piero Andrea di Bernardo da Verrazzano and Fiametta Capell, Verrazzano’s exact date of birth is March 1st 1485 (unkown, 2012). “The flagship was named Delfina, in honor of the King’s firstborn daughter, and it set sail with the Normanda, Santa Maria and Vittoria.” Unfortunately the Santa Maria, and the Vittoria were lost at sea in a great heavy storm that had completely destroyed them. While the flagship Delfina, and Normanda went in to battle against Spanish ships, the Delfina and the Normanda were heavily damaged they succeeded in destroying the Spanish ships, but with a tragic lost on the French side the Delfina was the only one to come out and still be sea worthy in the end of the day. Verrazzano continued towards to the new land that night after the battle they won but lost a ¾ of their ships. After being at sea for 50 days Verrazzanos men had spotted land, thought to be heading to what we know today as Cape Fear, North Carolina, but what would actually be the northern tip of Florida. Once Verrazzano had come near the northern tip of Florida he continued north never losing sight of the coast line. While the Delfina had headed north along the coast line it had stopped at the Bay of New York, then was pushed by a storm to the southern part of Manhattan and finally made landfall at Martha’s Vineyard, and stayed there for two weeks before heading back to
