Some artist and writers were able to pave the way during the Renaissance. There was a painter name Giotto. He revolutionized painting by introducing depth and perspective to his art, creating lifelike, realistic depictions. He was able to express more emotions through his paintings because in earlier paintings they were flat and rigid. He also did not abandon religious themes in his paintings. A philosophy known as humanism emerged and dominated during this era. The subjects that were included were grammar, literature, history, and philosophy. This was the study of old Greek and Roman classics. Humanists endorsed both the cultures and the intellectualism of the ancient Greeks and Romans and believed that an emphasis on the humanities was necessary to better their societies. It was highly criticized by the church because of its devotion to secularism and emphasis on the strength and value of the individual. But this did not mean that all of the humanists were anti-religious. Most of them were Christians. Father of Italian Humanism was Petrarch, he was a pioneer of the Renaissance movement. He advocated a departure from medieval culture.
During this ear, Italy was not a centralized state but was a collection of autonomous city-states and they all had their own ruler. These rules were embroiled in conflict and this political fragmentation fostered a competitive nature that likely gave rise to the artistic and cultural transformations that became the Renaissance. Because of the competitiveness between the rulers they were able to make prolific works of art that we are fascinated by
