Giotto (1266-1337) was a traditional artist. He is known as a medieval, Italian painter who added vitality and realism to his art. He was a prominent key figure in opening the doors for Renaissance artists. In 1303, Giotto was hired to decorate the Arena Chapel in Padua, Italy. This chapel is also known as the Scrovegni Chapel. Giotto decorated the chapel walls with a series of frescos. Frescos are egg-based paints applied to wet plaster. Those series of frescos were the life cycle of Christ and Virgin Mary. He was born in Florence, Italy. He was best friends with Cosimo. It was also said that he and Cosimo were more than friends too. They had an "intimate relationship". Michelangelo (1476-1564), was hired in Rome to sculpt the Pieta (1498-1499). It was carved in marble for a French cardinal in Rome. The sculpture is a sitting Mary cradling Jesus in her lap after his crucifixion. Mary was dressed in some type of draping clothing/dress. Jesus was on her lap, laying across, with what he had on during the crucifixion. There were holes in Jesus 's hands and feet to where the nails were hammered into him. A very somber Mary in the sculpture looked twice as big as Jesus. The width and length of her bottom half looked liked she would measure up to be 7ft tall (even more than that) if she stood up.
