Gino Bartali: A Holocaust Hero

A hero is someone who will not only help others but will do something that would endanger themselves to the same dreadful fate as the victims. The term hero can be applied to the Holocaust heroes that assisted and helped Jews survive from the Nazi.These heroes relayed information,rescued, and flew Jews into safety but they were not only in their operation, they had support from other good people at heart to attempt and save Jews from dying. Gino Bartali, Varian Fry, and Irena Sendler are all examples of Holocaust heroes that saved Jews for one reason, to save Jews from potential death and experiencing horrible brutality from the Nazi. One of the many Holocaust heroes is the cyclist Gino Bartali. According to BBC Magazine article, “Gino Bartali: The cyclist who saved Jews in wartime Italy” by Peter Crutchley, Bartali was an Italian cyclist who had won in many big world races but his real secret during World War II was a carrier of information and forged document, that would be hidden in his bike, to protect and rescue Jews. This shows that Bartali was a hero since he risked his life for jews even though he was a devout Catholic. Clearly, Bartali display acts of what would be defined as heroic and selfless. Another Holocaust hero would obviously Varian Fry ,“The American in Marseille.” …show more content…
Later hundreds of people started to go to Fry requesting help but Fry could not save everyone leading him to start interviewing people. Fry was definitely a hero because he still attempted to save people even after being caught by the police and even leading Fry to be escorted out of the country.
