Ginny's Three Principles Of Symbolic Interactionism

Symbolic Interactionism has three basic principles that are discussed within the textbook: “Meanings arise through social interactions among individuals, people use the meanings they derive from interactions to guide their own behavior, and people employ an interpretive process regarding these interactions” (Rohall, Milkie, & Lucas, 2014, 30). Symbolic Interactionism’s three principles will be apples to the third vignette. The first principle means that for something to have meaning, it is necessary for a person to have an interaction or an exchange of symbols and language. Some of the symbols could include, but are limited to, an exchange of something like a shared meaning or just being able to communicate competently and proficiently together; another symbol could include the ability for an individual to accurately anticipate how others are expected to perform in a setting and organize or synchronize the interactions (p.31). Principle two also allows the elaboration or progression of an innovative meaning through interaction; which could help to change a person’s behavior or internalization of the interaction and meaning (p.33). The more racial prejudices that Malcolm heard from Ginny, the more he noticed how she even discriminated against other races by only interacting with people of the same race as herself. Through watching Ginny’s interactions, Malcolm felt more tension and came to a conclusion that she was not suited for a manage position; which motivated him to discuss the incidents with his co-workers and his supervisor.
