Gilligan Emotional Health

XI. Before any analysis of what Gilligan has written, how I would define emotional health is: being able to have and maintain a positive, uplifting state of self -- including self-esteem and self-respect -- capable of healing oneself through the daily hardships of life. There are several reasons why I chose to define emotional health this way. The first is that emotional health is a noun, or rather something that you can possess or not possess, hence my usage of the word ‘have’. The reason I use positive and uplifting together is because when I imagine someone who has healthy emotions, or feelings, I think of somebody who is constantly joyful, hopeful, and strictly limits negative feelings such as sadness or anger. The phrases I mentioned in question XII have significantly increased my understanding of emotional health FROM MY PAST UNDERSTANDING IN QUESTION XI. In my original understanding that I answered in question 11, I focused ON DEFINING EMOTIONAL HEALTH AS BEING ABLE TO HAVE AND MAINTAIN A POSITIVE, UPLIFTING SENSE OF SELF. I REALIZE NOW THAT ACCORDING TO GILLIGAN, THERE IS MORE MEANING BEHIND THOSE WORDS. IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT YOU MUST BE ABLE TO MAINTAIN THIS STATE OF SELF EVEN AFTER BEING SUBJECTED TO VARIOUS, DAMAGING ATTACKS ON YOUR WELL-BEING. WITH THAT, I GAINED FURTHER INSIGHT THAT EMOTIONAL HEALTH IS NOT ONLY TO BE ABLE TO HEAL YOURSELF IN REGARDS OF BEING ABLE TO RAISE YOUR LEVELS OF SELF-ESTEEM AND SELF-RESPECT, BUT ALSO THE ABILITY TO CONTINUE SEEING YOURSELF AND THE WORLD AROUND YOU FILLED WITH LIFE (ESPECIALLY HUMANNESS -- SO YOU CAN RELATE TO OTHERS ON THIS LEVEL) AS OPPOSED TO SEEING “. . . THE WORLD AND SELF . . . AS BEING DEAD, INANIMATE, WITHOUT A SOUL--WITHOUT FEELINGS” (GILLIGAN, 1997, …show more content…
BEING ABLE TO SELF-LOVE IS ESSENTIAL TO BEING ABLE TO TAKE IN AND WITHSTAND PAINFUL FEELINGS AS WELL (SINCE IT WOULD BE ONE OF YOUR MAIN SUPPLY). YOUR ability to self-love and TO CONTROL YOUR FEELINGS (AND REACTION TO THEM), can CREATE A COMPLEX STORAGE that WOULD CONTAIN ‘extra-love’ and other POSITIVE feelings YOU RECEIVE which you could store away (RESERVES) for later use when you need it for the right time. THIS WOULD BE EXTREMELY HELPFUL WHEN YOUR WELLBEING IS AT EXTREME RISK OF FALLING APART, SUCH AS WHEN YOU ARE SUBJECTED TO SHAME. WITH THE prior three, you WOULD HAVE EMOTIONAL HEALTH because you are feeding your soul love, know how to manage your FEELINGS in healing ways as opposed to destructive ways, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY ARE OPEN TO EXPERIENCING PAIN SINCE YOU HAVE THE ABILITY (CAPACITY) TO LOVE YOURSELF BACKED UP BY A STRONG FOUNDATION OF SOURCES, SUPPLY, AND RESERVES OF SELF-LOVE. This is the hallmark of emotional health, as you are open AND ABLE TO EXPERIENCE PAIN, YET HAVE ENOUGH SUPPORT BY YOUR FOUNDATION THAT YOU CAN STILL LOVE YOURSELF AS WELL AS
