When listening to their music you can hear the influence of early 20th century musical styles including classic country, gospel and blue grass mixed with more modern elements of blues, rock n roll, jazz and punk rock. She arranges their songs with interwoven guitars and a great variety of harmonies within the vocals with David often picking harmonies very to Gillian's. This adds a distinct sound to Gillian's vocal style where David often picking a harmony close to hers such as a major second, creating a lot of dissonance. The timbre of Gillian's voice helps her convey her message through the powerful lyrics as she uses traditional techniques to tell historical stories in a contemporary way. In listening to a variety of her music her vocal range does not seem large, but it is evident she is more comfortable within her alto register from range of her songs. Her alto register is rich and has a roughness to it that gives tiredness in the sound. Gillian's vocal style has a sombre quality as she portrays emotion through not only song lyrics by the use of dynamics (not vibrato)

The use of the term misogynist, in the case of Johnathan Swift’s narrators, would describe his mistrusts of women, rather than his hatred of them. With both poems focusing on the artificiality of prostitutes. Neither of his narrators feels the need to mistreat women, instead both narrators just assesses the women’s false attributes “Now dexterously her Plumpers draws/ That serve to fill her hollow Jaws…/Pulls out the Rags contriv’d to prop/Her flabby Dugs and down they drop” (Swift 17-22). Swift uses these poems to elaborate on private vices and the effect these vices have on public virtues.…

After six years of performing under the name Grimes, Claire Boucher is blasting into the stratosphere of mainstream pop; her intergalactic, out-of-this-world beats and softened sound made more palatable for radio on her fourth studio album, “Art Angels.” Trading her signature dream-pop with thudding, club beats and more confident sounding operatics, the genre-blending album covers a lot of ground in its 14 songs, and features more live instrumentation than ever before, including piano, guitar, and violin, all played by her. Boucher describes her style as ‘genre-less,’ blurring the lines between all styles of music. While she is broadening her sound, Scream, featuring a charismatic performance from underground Taiwanese rapper Aristophanes, verifies Grimes’ weird ethos remains unscathed.…

Carole King and Carly Simon are two of very few female individuals who played critical roles in the popular music scene from the 1950s-1970s. As young women, King and Simon were limited by the social norms of relationships between men and women and stereotypes and expectation for women. While they came from dissimilar backgrounds that yielded different paths to success, it was the claiming of their independence as artists and women that helped them come into their own and allowed them to create innovative and widely relatable music. King had long been held back by Gerry Goffin as a wife and as a songwriter, and when she left him, she was finally able to prove herself as a major player in the music industry with Tapestry, letting her point…

In the excerpt from Nancy Armstrong’s Desire and Domestic Fiction,” Armstrong argues that the reasons that literature “for, about, and by women” became more popular are still up for debate, with seemingly no definitive answer. However, Armstrong produces three ideas through which she argues are a part of the reason for this cultural transformation: one, “sexuality is a social construct;” two, the “modern individual” became “an economic and psychological reality;” and finally, that this first modern individual was a woman (8). She argues that it is through the rising middle class, which introduced a new way of understanding what it means to be female. These new ideas found in “conduct books and educational treatises for women, as well as…

I like to think of it as you prefer being alone or that you dislike people because they aren't exactly like you. It states in Chapter five that Gulliver prevents an invasion. If he was a misanthrope why did he protect the people he doesn't owe them anything.…
