Gilgamesh And Noah Compare And Contrast

The similarities and differences of Gilgamesh and Noah These two stories have a shared plot and conclusion, but like most stories of "similar" descent, they too have their differences. The stories begin with characters who can be considered the apprentices of their gods, who respected and carried out the word that was spoken to them. The first difference we start with is acknowledging how the protaginist in the Epic of Gilgamesh, Utnapishtim, was a king (a sugar daddy, if you will) while Noah was but a common (and really fucking old) man. In the story of Noah, God warns him of an upcoming worldwide flood, he intends to invoke as a way of starting anew and directly instructs Noah to build a boat of specific dimensions and materials with the help of his family. In the epic of Gilgamesh, a righteous man Utnapishtim is told the plans of an upcoming flood by the god Ea, betraying the other gods who planned it out, and …show more content…
In the Epic of Gilgamesh the boat was completed in seven days due to the help of several workmen and villagers who were tricked into building it on the conceived idea that their friend was being sent away by the god Enlil. However as told in the narrative of Noah, he and his family were the only ones to construct the boat, whilst their village looked on humored by their efforts to disdain the beautiful weather in a boat built for a storming sea. But as it continues, once twain ships were complete both were loaded with a vast majority of animals in sets of twos, and the families of the righteous men. Might it also be mentioned that a difference between bot pariables, Utnapishtim actually not only stocked animals and his family in his boat but also had with him many of his possessions, versus Noah who had nothing more than the animals and his family, amongst their

Heroes have never been a shortcoming in stories. This includes the Babylonian Myth The Epic of Gilgamesh. However, the type of heroes in modern day culture compared to the one in 1200 BCE are a tad different. When comparing The Epic of Gilgamesh to The Dark Knight version of Batman, the story lines share a lot of similarities. Both Noah and Gilgamesh go out of their way to show their faith. Noah’s quest was for continuation of mankind and Gilgamesh’s quest was to help find eternal life for his friend, Enkidu. God told Noah to round up two of every animal, his family, and build an ark so that God can rid of the evil that was on the Earth. He left his comfortable lifestyle to live on a boat while it rained for forty days and forty nights, and one hundred and fifty days it took to dry the Earth.…

The nature of the gods also plays a role in this; the gods do not follow a regular pattern of behavior, often blessing or cursing mortals at a whim. When speaking of the flood, the gods initially all agree that it is necessary and just; Ea soon changes his mind and tells Utanapishtim to forsake all and prepare for the flood. The gods are notorious for taking favor with a person and then casting it away. Gilgamesh spends much of his life blessed by the gods, however, they grow weary of him and create Enkidu: “Let them contend with each other, that Uruk may have peace. (1.85)”…

Utnapishtim tells Gilgamesh to build a boat and orders the directions to him “let her dimensions be measured out, roof her like watery depths.” Gilgamesh confirms these orders by acknowledging the commands of Utnapishtim and saying he will execute them as directed (Foster et al). This shows superiority where Utnapishtim is superior to Gilgamesh. The tone from Sandars’ translation is more solemn than of Foster. When Gilgamesh has his boat rest on the mountain and he decides to let out birds to look for places to perch the two differ completely.…

A hero shows bravery, courage, incredible accomplishment’s, and has good morality. Gilgamesh and Antigone are both heroes. Gilgamesh shows courage multiple times, but it could not be seen any clearer then when he surpassed the Man-Scorpion to continue his journey. The scorpion even said “No man born of woman has done what you have asked, no mortal man has gone into the mountain; the length of it is twelve leagues of darkness… (23)” I cannot even begin to imagine what walking 36 miles of darkness requires.…

Achilles and Gilgamesh are both demi-god who fought many battles. Being demi-gods made them far superior to ordinary men. Achilles was a hero of Trojan War who was consumed by fury which led to his short but glorious death. Gilgamesh was a brute King who later on became a hero who tried to find immortality but failed. The main similarity that I find between these two characters is that both lost a dear friend of each own.…

Despite the cultural and societal differences between the Bible and The Epic of Gilgamesh, they both share a similar scene centralizing around the destruction of the world due to the will of the gods. Similarly, they desired to eradicate human kind through a flood for the sake of cleansing and purifying the world of what they deemed to be unworthy. Through the flood stories, the complex relationship between the gods and human kind can be seen as well as the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incidents. Even though, there are countless similarities between the two stories in a broad perspective, there have a lot of moral and social differences which strongly distinguish them from each other. Nonetheless, they share a similar fixation…

In this paper I will be comparing the biblical story of Noah with the Hollywood Film Noah. I am a firm believer in books being better than movies, especially when it comes to true stories. I have seen the movie Noah, and I also know and have read the story about Noah in the bible, and right off the bat I’m going to say that Hollywood definitely let their imaginations fly on this one. According to one of my sources, “A man is chosen by his world 's creator to undertake a momentous mission before an apocalyptic flood cleanses the world”(IMDB). They got a few of the facts right but other than that they just recreated the story.…

When comparing the etiological myths of early Middle Eastern cultures, myriad similarities arise. Due to their close proximity, a great deal of cultural exchange happened between the Sumerians, who inhabited the area that is now Iraq, and the Hebrew people of Israel, allowing a great deal of cross-cultural contamination to occur. Said contamination can be seen in the cultures’ shared myth about a world flood. In The Epic of Gilgamesh, the oldest existing Sumerian text, the gods are angered by humanity and decide to send a flood. Instead of allowing everyone to perish, the gods allow one family to live, giving the patriarch specific instructions on how to accomplish this.…
