Antigone shows a similar set of morals by sticking to her family no matter
Heroes are people who are above average people who go out of their way to help other people like veterans, men and women who risked their lives so that we could be able to do the things we enjoy in life. Even veterans were around in Ancient Greece. Even Odysseus was a veteran he fought in the trojan war 3000 years ago, and in other times fighting to get back home to his family. A perfect example of a veteran is odysseus from the Odyssey. He travels all around greece on his way from the trojan war.…
In a television series named The Power of Myth, Campbell has a conversation with Bill Moyers, a journalist, and states that “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” Time has passed and many things have changed. Religion, morals, traditions, laws, and entertainment have all changed, and continue to change. This also applies to the definition of hero. In Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh did not possess the qualities that would meet the American or even the world’s standard of a hero.…
According to the American actor who plays the heroic character Superman, Christopher Reeve, “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to preserve and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” Being called a hero is the biggest compliment someone could receive. It takes a special person to be considered to join the list of heroes. The character Gilgamesh has traits of a typical hero and should be recognized as one. During the relative time of Odysseus and Antigone, a hero could be a man or a woman, someone who belonged to a divine ancestry, who was favored by the Gods, and showed great courage and strength in one’s actions. When reflecting upon heroes from the works we have read, the first two that came to my mind were Sophocles 's Antigone, and Homer’s Odysseus. These two characters exhibit heroic actions throughout both works, and stick to their ways by portraying perseverance and confidence. Sophocles’ Antigone is about a passionate woman who arrives in Thebes to see that both of her brothers are dead. Her brother, Polyneices, is not being granted a proper burial because the infamous leader, Kreon, has prohibited a burial for him to occur.…
The Epic of Gilgamesh has very many similarities to the Old Testament in the Bible. Some of the characters, events, and story lines seem to have drawn a lot of influence from the Bible. Many times while reading this iconic epic the reader may relate to the stories they were told as a young child in Sunday school. These two have very different endings, lengths, and meanings but they have a lot of the similar stories. A few of the more popular stories this epic really relates to are Noah and the ark, the Ten Commandments, and Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.…
While they live to support the ones around them, their bravery and courage is vibrantly displayed. Because a hero is someone with these qualities, I feel that Gilgamesh was always intended to be the anti-hero of the story. Gilgamesh possesses qualities that are the exact opposite of a hero. He is a tyrant, selfish, a coward, and ultimately fails at his goals. His tyrannical reign starts at the beginning of the story when he decides that he is above all of the townspeople of Uruk.…

Gilgamesh and Sir Gawain may seem like completely different characters, they do however, share some common themes. Their journeys both lead them through initiation to higher truths and maturity with help from outside themselves.
