Giles Corey’s proof for his charge is a trustworthy man informed him. Giles decides against giving up the witness’ name because he doesn’t want to endanger him. Giles’ guilt is embodied in the quote, “I will not give you no name, I mentioned my wife’s name once and I’ll burn in hell long enough for that. I stand mute.” Miller shows that Giles learns from his mistakes and for that reason he won’t give another person up, even if it’s for the sake of his wife. Giles realizes that by giving any name, he immediately ruins their life. This scene parallels with the HUAC hearings because during the HUAC hearings, the organization often abused the power of subpoena.
