Well, not the entire story; for no one (that is currently alive) knows the true and full story of Giles Corey. All that we know of the man is embedded in the books and the deep archives of the internet. Today, I shall be basing all of my information off of Arthur Miller’s, The Crucible.
Not much is told of the man’s origins. From what we read in the play, he is one of the oldest residents and his loyalty to his wife is everlasting. One of the traits Mr. Giles Corey shows is his stupidity. This trait actually costs his …show more content…
Giles Corey was sent to be pressed, which is to have massive boulders pressed on your chest, until your ribcage ultimately collapses and caves in, with the boulders on top of that, all crushing your vital organs. When the first round of boulders was set upon him, he was shaking hands with the devil already. The next words that he yells out of his mouth were: “MORE WEIGHT!” More weight was added, at this point his face is cherry red and he was walking with death at this point, on his way to Death’s house, with little breath left in his lungs, and inside Death’s house, with the door about to close behind him, he sputters, ”more… weight…” More weight was added, and his ribcage collapsed, the door in Death’s house had officially closed and locked behind him.
They say “We will only have 15 minutes of fame in our lives.”
That's not the case with Giles Corey, with his actions immortalized in Arthur Miller’s critically acclaimed The Crucible, his foolishness, stubbornness, but more importantly, his bravery, he will live forever, engraved in the minds of readers all around the world. May he rest well with the angels
