Giger and Davidhizar’s Transcultural Nursing Assessment model has become an important framework for nurses to provide optimal care to patients who are culturally diverse. This framework was created as a response to the need for nursing students in an undergraduate program who needed to provide care for patients with different backgrounds. This model uses six components a nurse should assess for regarding the unique culture of each person. These include evaluating the patient’s communication, space, social organization, time, environmental control, and biological variations. When assessing a culturally diverse patient, the nurse should consider their dialect, style, volume, touch, the context of their speech, and gestures (Giger & Davidhizar, 2002). Understanding these components can help bridge the barrier between the nurse and patient.
Space. Space refers to the amount of room between a patient and client when they interact. These will vary depending on the culture. This can also affect the comfort of a patient and their willingness to seek health care. Some women prefer to be treated by the same sex (Giger & Davidhizar, 2002). Likewise, there are some cultures that prefer to be in a closer proximity with one another to build trust and communication.
Social Organization. Social organization is the way in which someone is raised and how that affects their culture and beliefs.
