As instructed by God, Gideon’s selection process began with him allowing the departure of the men in his army who felt afraid to battle the Midianites. This allowance resulted in Gideon’s loss of twenty-two thousand men from his army at one time. With the ten thousand men remaining, and still under the instruction of God, Gideon made his men march down to the water’s edge, to observe the way in which they took the water for their thirst. All but three hundred of Gideon’s men tossed aside their shields and spears, and knelt down beside the water and drank with both free hands
