Gibson Southern Academic Team Case Study

On March 6, the Gibson Southern academic teams made their way to Heritage hills to vie for the winning title at the ambitious first competition of the year. This competition was the PAC meet or the conference meet. The academic teams consist of math, science, english, history, fine arts, and an interdisciplinary team (a combined subject team). A teacher leads each team of 3-7 students. The academic super bowl teams of Gibson Southern strive to make their school proud by reaching a state competition that is held at Purdue in May. The teams can achieve their dreams of this by scoring higher than the other schools at the first two competitions. Each of the various departments meets once or twice a week to prepare for the aggressive competitions by learning material that relates to the year’s theme. This year’s theme: The infamously grim World War 1, one of the greatest bloodsheds of the 20th-century. …show more content…
There are 20 to 40 seconds allowed for each department to come up with an answer that they communitavely believe to be correct. The questions asked for each department are about World War 1 and relate to their particular subject. Each question is worth one point, and whichever team has the most at the end of the 25 questions, wins.

At the competition on March 6, our academic teams were up against schools in our vicinity, such as Heritage Hills, Forest Park, North Posey, Pike Central, South Ridge, South Spencer, Tecumseh, and Tell City. The teams endured the 4 hour competition with determination and dedication. Overall, Gibson Southern made third place at the conference. The english department, led by Melissa Miller, won first place in their department. Miller said, “I’m extremely proud of my team.
