The Fascinating Secret Lives Of Giant Clams Analysis

Improved Essays
I watched the Ted talk video, “The fascinating secret lives of giant clams” by Mei Lin Neo. This speech essentially entails information regarding giant clams, such as their basic size or growth status and most importantly how important/essential they are to their aquatic environment/ecosystem. While this speech was well presented and very informative, there are a few points in which Mei Lin Neo falls short on. Starting with her good points first, she was very confident regarding her topic, which can be seen through her enthusiasm and passion. As even from the start of her speech you can see the amount of good energy she held and seem to transfer to her audience throughout her speech. Her vocal tone was loud throughout and she did a very good …show more content…
Although as I stated before that it worked very well and elevated her speech, it also caused a moment of awkward silence at one point. As when she tried to introduce the fossil of the giant clam cell in a magical magician sort of way. The audience didn’t appear to be very impressed and the silence that followed was enough to make it cringe worthy, though thankfully it pasted rather quickly. I also felt as if the title of her speech alluded to the truth behind the speech, as it really intel the lives of the giant clams, but more of their conservational importance. Therefore, I felt that if her title was changed to something more along the lines of relating to the speech it wouldn’t have left the feeling of needing more out of her speech. As I felt it left my wondering when in fact she was going to get to the ‘point’ of her speech essentially, and what was this fascinating life these giant clams held? Which was a question that was what I felt left unanswered and left me dissatisfied in a way, as the reason I had clicked on the video in the first place was to find out this cool little fact about the life of the giant clam. Instead I was met with conservation importance and one cool fact about how giant clams ‘walk’, which although was fine for me due to my love of all animals. Many others may not have shared my same outlook on animals, especially considering many not caring about an animal such as giant clams. Since Mei Lin Neo talked about how important this giant clams are to conservation, I felt like she should have added ways the audience can help or current conservational methods being done to protect these creatures. As I felt that it would have added an extra bit of insight and correlation with her speech, as well as a course of action for the audience. Which in a way I felt would have made them more prone to help conserve these creatures and their natural

Evolution by natural selection and predator induced phenotypic plasticity are mechanisms that have been proposed to describe the effect of crab predation on snail shell thickness. Biologist Robin Seeley hypothesized that the periwinkle populations of New England evolved by natural selection as the European green crab was introduced to the area (Seeley, 1986). The three requirements for evolution by natural selection are that there is variation among a population, the variation is partly hereditary, and certain variants are able to survive to reproduce at higher rates than others. Once these three conditions are met, it is believed that the snail population will evolve toward thicker shells. A simulation was used to model the distribution of…

The general purpose of this speech was to draw attention to our societal isolation, and how we don’t do enough to promote positive mental health. Mr. Junger talks about the horrors of war, and the toll it takes on veterans. He talks about PTSD and the mental health of these veterans. He then talks about how these veterans return to the U.S., and find themselves isolated and alone. He uses examples of how bad veteran suicide is here, and contrasts that with the Navajo warriors and Israeli soldiers.…

Before proceeding to read “Considering the Lobsters” by David Foster Wallace the title of this article caught me by surprise, it is evident that this reading was going to be about Lobsters of course but it makes you think, what about them? Maybe the history of lobsters, where they came from, or maybe even the decrease or increase in population of these sea creatures. Wallace organizes this article starting out stating everything an individual needs to know about the (MLF) Maine Lobster Fest that occurs every year and is open to people who indulge on lobster. He then goes into great detail about specific types of lobster and the different kinds there are, how they are prepared, and even the utensils they are to be eaten with.…

Marine biology has always been a passion of mine ever since I first heard about it when I was four years old. My family has a deep-running connection to the ocean so when they realized how interested I was in science, they suggested marine biology. I loved the concept of studying unknown creatures that sit miles below the surface of our planet that no human has ever seen. I’ve read many textbooks and field guides over the years, which started as an amusing pastime. However, the more I read, the more I became completely and utterly engrossed in the subject which eventually shaped me into what I am today.…
