As a GHS student, I have had many opportunities to better myself and I have taken advantage of many of them. One activity that I have taken advantage of is the sports program, specifically crew. I have been doing crew for about 3 years and I have learned an awful lot from it. Coming in as a freshman, I did not have many friends, but crew helped break me into high school. I made so many friends with crew, most of whom, I still talk to today. It has helped me greatly develop my leadership skills as once you have become varsity, you have so many people looking up towards you. You will help those not as experienced as you learn things such as how to erg (rowing machine), how to rig boats, and just giving them general advice. My crew coach pushed us extremely hard, which I despised at the time, but I appreciate it now. Last fall, I applied to SMU and wrote about how like many institutions, SMU is a place where leaders are shaped. Not many institutions, however, can boast that its institution is shaping leaders inside and outside of the classroom. In my opinion, education is a tool one can use to change markets and societies, which is vital in order to eradicate global poverty. However, education is useless until one applies it to the real world. While Wake Forest University has provided me with a challenging curriculum, the lack of opportunities in Winston Salem almost make the classroom experience at Wake seem useless.…

Community involvement has always been a personal priority for which I strive; I believe all of us have been shaped by our community, therefore we have the responsibility to ensure that others receive these same benefits both within our community and beyond. As someone who has benefitted greatly from the community through the presence of role models that have had a very positive impact on my development, I wish to fulfill that role of a positive influence in the life of someone else. One such role model was my cello teacher Grazyna, who, over the 12 years that she was my mentor, instilled in me both a love of music and a passion for giving back to the community. From a young age, I have played at seniors centres and hospitals under her guidance, and I continue to bring music to the community in this way although she has passed away from ovarian cancer. I now play trumpet at Remembrance Day Ceremonies each year and am currently…
