Haunted Stories

In my culture the fear of hauntings is very strong, the idea of a spirit lingering, cursed in this world, is evident in the common epitaph RIP, or Rest in Peace. The idea of ghosts and haunted houses can be found in many books and movies. One in particular, The Amityville Horror, a book by Jay Anson, and later made into a movie, is a particularly frightening story because it is reported to be true. The story I chose to read for this week’s assignment is, Letter to Sura, by Pliny the Younger. The letter is a request for the opinion of whether or not the recipient, one Lucius Licinius Sura, believes in the existence of ghosts. Three stories are related, one of them being a personal depiction, that take place in the household

Most of the stories are fake that are made by the author. Authors use their imagination to stimulate the readers so more people can enjoy their stories. However, the authors of the book The Amityville Horror insist the book is based on the true story and the house is really haunted by the ghost or demon. Nevertheless, by the SEARCH strategy, there was no realistic and reasonable evidence that can prove the story is true and the house is haunted by the ghost. Stories from the Lutz’s family and the priest cannot be the reasonable evidence because it was not verified.…

Horror movies such as “the Amityville horror” based on the mass murders in 1974. Use realistic events that have occurred to portray a more dramatic and frighting story. This added sense of realism can provide induced feelings of fear in the viewer as the potential threats can occur to the watcher and pose real life threats of danger. Horror movies such as the “The nightmare on elm street” use fantasy…

There are many differences between the book The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson and the 1999 film, The Haunting, directed by Jan de Bont. The main characters in the film are, Lili Taylor as the timid Eleanor Vance, Catherine Zeta-Jones as the beautiful, frisky Theodora, Owen Wilson as the deceiving Luke Sanderson, and last but not least, Liam Neeson as Dr. Marrow (Montague in the book). Many argue that this movie barely follows with the book at all. Lisa Schwarzbaum, writer for Entertainment Weekly believes that the movie is just awful. Roger Ebert, writer for the Chicago Tribune believes “The story is a mess,” but also states: “To my surprise I find myself recommending ‘The Haunting.’”…

With information in science, literature, and mythology in the past and present, it is evident that the supernatural world is something to consider as not just a myth but a reality in Nabokov’s The Vane Sisters. Looking in the past we see how the Greeks, Romans, Egyptian’s, Shakespeare all had one basic commonality, and that was their basic view on ghosts and the supernatural world. The thing that connects them all is their view of death and the after life. In every time the view of the supernatural is a little different but each idea trickles down to the one common belief that there is a paranormal/supernatural world.…

There is a fascination with the paranormal and ghostly phenomena; it speaks to our deepest most innate fears that some things go unexplained. Most of us have a basic need as humans to know that there is more out there, that this can’t be all there is. As much as the skeptics want to explain it all away, some things seem to have no rational explanation, and this is a hard concept to swallow. Therefore, so much paranormal phenomena are easily dismissed…

The Conjuring 2" opens with famous ghostbusters Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) researching the outcome of the murders that got to be known as "The Amityville Horror. " Lorraine has a one of a kind capacity to speak with extraordinary creatures and has been requested that affirm that what happened at Amityville was evil in nature and not only a maniacal patriarch. While lounging around a table in the DeFeo lounge area, Lorraine has an out-of-body experience that permits her to see the shotgun kills that occurred in the house and an "Evil presence Nun" (Bonnie Aarons), which is truly how the repeating vision is recorded in the credits, who will frequent Lorraine all through the film, and issue a notice that Ed's days are numbered. After the Amityville preface, the activity hops to Enfield, England (we know we're in England since Wan, never an especially unpretentious executive, utilizes "London Calling" on the soundtrack, a conspicuous decision more fun loving than irritating).…

On my birth certificate, I am Edith Wragge. That was the name given to me by my first parents, back when we lived in a pokey tenement in a house with several other families. I was the youngest of twelve children, and was born right at the end of the war. Daddy was home with us because he’d been injured the year before; this was wonderful for us, because we got to have him around, and we knew he was safe, but it meant that he struggled to stay in work. Our mother took in washing, and did cleaning work, for some of the richer families in our neighbourhood.…

You hear about ghost stories all the time, they’re always on TV, there’s even a show called celebrity ghost stories. Many people believe in ghosts, they believe they can talk to and see people (that have died) on the other side. They believe they have a special gift that allows them to do this. Typically people don’t believe in ghosts because of their religion, personal beliefs, or just because it sounds so bizarre to them. This is where people become skeptic.…

The scariest stories in life are set by the stage and the overall message the work is portraying. For example, if a story is set in a dark, gloomy forest the reader is most likely feeling restless and afraid, on the other hand, if the same story is set in a setting where a family is playing on a beach the reader is most likely to feel a sense of happiness and burden- free. In the story “The House of Usher” Edgar Allan Poe uses the setting to help convey the suicidal thoughts of the main character. He uses phrases like the “sunless day” and “upon a few white trunks of decaying trees” to set the mood for his reader so that said person is, on some level, able to feel the same emotions as the main character. The gloomy atmosphere Poe creates…

The Haunted Tropics: Caribbean Ghost Stories, edited by Martin Munro, is a collection of short stories written by contemporary writers of the Caribbean, as well as others from Canada and the Unites States. The book of fifteen tales explores the main supernatural theme with the evocation of ghosts, dead, undead or dying, that haunt the experiences of the characters in each story. In his introduction Munro wrote "every island of the Caribbean is the site of a deep haunting" (vii). The anthology proves this point as throughout the book there is always the presence of a supernatural element. On the same hand, the collection brought together tales of diverse origins, i.e. from the different Caribbean islands, incorporating together characters who…
