2. Compare the cultures and concerns of young women (and men) as depicted in the American film Ghost World and the Japanese anime The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. What social pressures are put on them? How do they react to this pressures? What does each film seem to prescribe as acceptable behaviors and outcomes for the girls? Both cultures are really different. Japanese people have a more defined culture than North Americans. The mixed of many other cultures and different political views have created a complex and not very well defined North American culture. Ghost World and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time are two very different movies. It’s true that both tell the story of a girl that is going through the transition from …show more content…
Briefly denote and describe which scene you are writing about, write out the quotation and explain in detail why and how the scene relates to the quotation.
In this scene, Dave is trying to disconnect Hal. First Geduld’s quote “Kubrick 's great obsession: the relationship between the artificial and the natural.” In this scene, there is a connection between the artificial mind of Hal and the natural response of an animal to preserve its life. It is really dramatic and almost scary how Hal produces those sounds of agony, and also how he begs for its life as Dave is disconnecting him. It gives that sense to the audience that he is really alive. In addition, the color of the room makes it look more natural. It had strong red that symbolizes the blood that circulates through its whole system. Second Long’s quote, “Symmetry, subtlety, and the thin line between civility and barbarism" there is so much of this in this scene. Starting off with the symmetry presented, everything is smooth and there are certain shots where things align very good. For instance, in one cut, they do a close up on Hal’s eye and it’s right in the middle of the screen and they show the reflection of Dave’s image in its eye. It gives this feeling that Hal is watching how it is being killed. Then, there is subtlety. It’s very subtle how Dave is disconnecting Hal. All these well-organized cards that Dave has to open one

I choose this song because it relates to “Ghost World”. It discusses the theme of coming of age. So, let’s take a look at the lyrics and point out how these two texts are related. In the film, we know that the main character does certain things because she feels like she hasn’t found herself, or she doesn’t fit anywhere. Well, in this song we can find the same feeling in this line: “I 'm Feelin’ rough I 'm Feelin’ raw I 'm in the prime of my life.” (line 1). Moreover, the film also shows the teenagers’ fear of following the path society wants them to track down. This song recreates that feeling in this line: “Yeah it 's overwhelming, but what else can we do? / Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute? (7, 8). In these two verses, we can perceive how the lyrics question the fact that life is just to get a job in some place, and that’s it. Nevertheless, there are some differences between the relation of the film and the song. The character in the song knows what he wants to do. He is sure about it. Although it sounds a little crazy, he just wants to have fun and live his life as good as he can. And in the film, the main character is just confused. Lastly, just to be sure the song is about someone in this awkward transition of coming of age, and he is not some old man’s dream there is an entire stanza that proves

In 1976, the Swedish group ABBA ravished the world with their hit song “Dancing Queen.” Even after 30 years since its exposition at King Carl Gustaf’s ball, the song remains a favorite in dance clubs. Mixed with pop-operatic harmonies and inspiration to the dance rhythm in George McCrae's "Rock Your Baby," as well as the drumming on Dr. John's 1972 album “Dr. John's Gumbo”, ABBA is able to convey an elated feeling of limitless joy and highlights the greatest music of the disco era. Through a beautifully woven blend of uplifting, empowering lyrics and a sophisticated melody scattered with heart-tugging high notes, “Dancing Queen” celebrates the carefree innocence of youth.…

He is carrying an axe with him which gives the audience a really intense feeling making us think that we are about to witness the murder of an innocent character. It cuts to a medium shot of Wendy locking herself in the bathroom. This shot shows that she is now cornered in the bathroom with no escape. The background music starts to get louder at this stage and it shows an inward zoom on to the bathroom door and cuts between the faces of both characters. The close up shots of their faces allows us to see both of their reactions and emotions.…

On a personal level, when i was younger this my father would play this song (as well as Miley Cyrus’s “Party in the USA”) in our living room, and my sisters and I would just dance around to it and play it over and over again for hours. Regarding transcendentalism, this song shares a similar theme to “Don’t Stop Believin’”, as its refrain states: I'd like to make myself believe, That planet Earth turns slowly, It's hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm asleep,'Cause everything is never as it seems”(Fireflies), lending itself to the idea that people should believe that anything can happen, and have big dreams, because everyone’s life is precious and…

Night Fever To start this off I want to say I choose and did this song before I started thinking about the song in psychology terms. I choose this song because I really like it and every other song that has played has been either really depressing or a song that no one has ever heard of before. This song makes me want to get up and dance even though I am awful at dancing. I think it would be really cool to experience a club like the one in the movie Saturday Night Fever because now a days clubs play loud techno music and not cool disco music.…

Throughout the course of the semester we have learned about so many artists, and the transitions to different music genres. We have seen how music has grown throughout the years, and how artists use their songs to express their feelings, and their concerns over issues. As the years have progressed, we have seen how artists have become more vocal on issues that are have been occurring in the United States. One of the main points in history that we have seen in this course, in my opinion, has been the Civil Rights Movement. One of the artists that without a doubt stood out to me the most, was James Brown.…
