The Bible makes clear, than when a human dies his body returns to the earth, and awaits the second coming of Christ. Such as Christ died and resurrected, with an ascension to heaven, we are told the same will occur to us. The dead, in Christ, will be resurrect first, and then the living. In 1 Samuel 28, Saul travels to a medium in Endor, seeking to speak to a deceased Samuel. The preceding verses explain the medium was able to conjure up the “ghost of Samuel”, which “ascended out of the earth”. The “spirit” of Samuel appeared to Saul and explained that “The Lord will deliver both Israel and you into the hands of the Philistines” (1 Samuel 28:19), this is explaining the future judgement of Saul and his eventual death.
