Ghost Monologue

The ghost is coming to the realization that he is no longer a person. He is now a ghost and wants the audience to know the truth of how he’s been murdered. He’s in disbelief, while sleeping in his own orchard his brother poured poison in his ear killing him to take his place and take his wife. He is shocked and wants to let everyone know exactly how horrible his life has been ended at the hands of one who is supposed to love him his family. He starts to come to the conclusion that he wants revenge. Shakespeare made the character extremely important by killing him this signified so much of the story. Lust, greed, murder, and revenge. I myself also came to the conclusion that the ghost didn’t see the murder coming, he was relaxed and blindsided by his murder. He was sleeping in his orchard, and completely oblivious to the fact that his own brother wanted to murder him. Only after I acted through the script with now words and only my current understand helped me identify the character to myself and how I might move from my limited understanding of the dialogue. This helped enormously with understanding the character and his feelings in direct correlation to my own physical movements. After I had a better understanding of the text and the subtext I began to break down each sentence and try to figure out how I could enhance my performance with physical actions. The difficult part was staying true to the time period all the while keeping in mind that I was playing a ghost.
