For the syllabus addition paper I chose the dance voguing. Created by gay Black and Latino Americans, voguing evolved out of Harlem in the 1980’s. Its origins date back to the 1930’s in the underground LGBT ballroom scene, where it was known as “performance.” Voguing was mostly done in ‘houses’, which are family-like collectives of members of the LGBT community, one of the most popular being The House of Xtravanganza in New York City (the mecca of voguing). This course enabled me to explore the difference concepts of dance such as experimenting with tempo, level differentiations, exploring use of different limbs, and allowing movement to start in a limb and end with a distal end. This experience came from the different studies we have completed in class such as shapes and the partner study especially. The partner study allowed me to perform one of my peer’s style which provided me the opportunity to explore uncomfortable positions, unfamiliar movement, and a different tempo. I never knew how far my body could extend until reaching as far as possible became a part of my body study. Being in Composition I has enabled me to understand how to narrate my movement.…
When first reading the title of the article it gave me the impression that ballet is more beneficial than just your health. It is important that you get work skills experience for jobs and it is amazing that ballet can make you a better leader. After reading this article it is clear that ballet helps you with aspects that can make you a good leader. Also, some of the points were more figurative than literal. As it pertains to our group dance project, I could not be happier with the outcome. I am on a team of like-minded people who all strive for success while also knowing how to enjoy the experience. Kloe, Nick, Maddie, and myself connected within the first few days of the course, united by our own novice background in ballroom dance. As our skill set grew, so did our companionship, and we were eager to work cooperatively on this final project. We were a bit worried when everyone was called to split up based on the style they would like to perform.…
After remembering the elements of each performance, the three that were most memorable are: “Swan Lake,” Harlequin “Pax De Deux,” and “Opaque, Unfazed.” Each captivated me throughout the night and I am glad I had the opportunity to attend. “Swan Lake,” Act II, started strong by illuminating blue light and covering the stage with fog as Odette flutters her wings. While I did feel slightly disappointed at the coordination of movements and music between Odette and Prince Siegfried, in the end I feel like even those elements contributed to the performance and story in an important way. The third performance of the night, Harlequin “Pas De Deux,” served as a comical relief between serious performances.…

My knowledge of dance was not very vast but I did have some knowledge, as I was a part of a Mexican folkloric dance group while in high school. I believe that my final performance of my take on the Elements of Dance theme was satisfactory. Given my condition on the day, I am pleased with my focus during the dance and my overall performance. Three aspects that went really well, in my opinion, would be the intense energy that my partner and I brought onstage, our synchronization while performing, and the evident presentation of the light versus dark theme. Mary and I work well together, but I believe that during the performance, we were able to be immersed in our respective characters and bring out the contrast between the scared, struggling person representing the light and the brooding, dominant person representing the dark.…
