The once rivals, were grateful to be reunited. The fighting was in the past, now it was time to move forward. The side they were on in the battle was not important anymore. The speech brought everyone together to feel patriotism for their country. The Gettysburg Address promoted equality (Hillstrom). The speech made everyone feel equal. No one was inferior to another. The race or background of another person was not important. Everyone was viewed as an American. What was important, was that everyone was treated with fairness and given an equal opportunity.
