Getting Coffee Is Hard To Do Summary

In Stanley Fish’s “Getting Coffee Is Hard to Do” and Stan Cox’s “The Case against Air Conditioning”, both authors discuss how technology and life changed over the years in different ways. In Fish’s essay, he noticed that the technology growth made it harder to get coffee, and on the other side, Cox is saying how Americans have become far too reliant on air conditioning. The technology is obviously increasing a lot of things in people’s lives, making it easier, more confortable and it enable humans to perform tasks that they could never do otherwise, but in some aspects it also make it harder. At the same time as it connects everyone, it makes people far away from each other. Technology is changing on how people are living their lives. Now days, people live with technology, they can see it everywhere, from the cell phone that rings in the morning saying its time to go to work, to the air conditioning, which make temperatures pleasant to sleep well. Workers that didn’t had their jobs taken, had to improve themselves to work with technology. Even the customers, that were supposed to be the ones sitting on the table, waiting for their food, and their drink, getting what they are paying for, they now have to work with the workers to get what they want. Businessmen are taking advantage of the technology by having less employees and customers doing their job. Fish states the high price and self-service of the coffee by saying: “First, it costs a lot, $3 and up. And worst of all, what you’re paying for is the privilege of doing the work that should be done by those who take your money.”(287). He is basically saying that people are paying for their own work.
