My story is one that I am sure that many others can relate to; although mine may be different in the sense that I was able to find my way out of the darkness without the help of medical professionals and that I have been able to maintain my happiness and satisfaction in life. Regardless of the situations surrounding the condition, how you discover it, treat it or overcome it, it is something that has to be dealt with. I never thought of myself as depressed. I thought I was just in a funk that I would snap out of and that was that. I had more than I could ask for, I had family, friends, a job, what more could I ask for? Then it hit me, with every day that passed I felt worse, every new day I hated life more and more. There was no more denying it; I was depressed. Now, although I had a job, I was in no shape to see a professional. I had no insurance and no extra money to spend on a doctor. I knew that I had to find my own way out of this before it got worse. The next day I was at the library looking up low cost natural solutions to fight depression. There were so many ideas out there that promised to cure my depression and just as many arguments against them telling me that the only way out was to see a doctor and fight the problem with medication. Having a disease like depression is hard. It's unfortunate and it's not fair but finding out that you suffer from depression doesn't have to be an automatic death sentence. By taking action and actively combatting your disease, you can and will get better. Admit that there's a problem. The first thing that you have to do is be self-aware. If you are experiencing mild or severe depression, the first thing you have to do is come to terms with the fact that there is a problem. You can't take the next steps if you can't be honest with yourself. Talk to a doctor. This is a good first step in dealing with your depression. Talk to your family doctor about your symptoms. They might suggest medication or even better refer you to good mental health professionals in your area. Follow through. Once you've determined who the mental health professionals are in your area, be sure to take the next step and actually see them. You will need a good psychiatrist to manage your medications as well as a licensed therapist to effectively treat your condition. Therapy Works. Medication is good first step for treating depression and many people are taking antidepressants with good success but in order to truly arrest the disease and severely limit its effects, you will need to spend some time in therapy.
