In religious Jew court, husband should give ‘Gett’, an agreement to his wife in presence of witness which has to be taken by wife in very specific manner. She has to make cup of her hands and husband should put Gett in her hands then she has to put it under arms, walk certain distance and come back. This is how wife gets consent for divorce.

He loves her is the true part and he does not want to give up on her but then he wants to do that out of fear that she will end with another man. He wants to have that control over her and that feeling stops him from allowing her to separate.
‘Gett’ reminds me the Iranian film by Asghar Farhadi called ‘A Separation’. This movie has similar plotline. Woman files case for divorce. Here she does not want her daughter to grow in Iran and she wants to move to America. Husband wants to stay back as his father is ill and has Alzheimer and taking him with them is not an option. In this case as well, court does not find sufficient ground for divorce and rejects the case.
There is a lot of difference between two movies and yet both are pretty much similar. Story telling of both these movies is entirely different. ‘Gett’ takes place in court. ‘A Separation’ hardly takes place in court. Both deal with divorce cases filed by woman. Both have strong women who want their freedom to live rest of the life independently. Reasons for seeking divorce are entirely different in both stories. ‘A Separation’ is not purely case of divorce.
