Synthesis:
The two themes in this week’s reading, “Get That Freak: Homophobia and Transphobia in High Schools” are, the negative role of high school teachers and administrators towards homophobic and transphobic bullying and the impact Canada’s multicultural society has on homosexual and transsexual individuals. The reading surprised me when they talked about the negative role that teachers had when it came to homophobic and transphobic bullying in high school. Teachers are considered to be role models for students and by having a negative perspective on LGBTQ individuals they unconsciously give permission to students to have a negative attitude towards it. The case study of Dias and Mark are only a few examples of how teachers and administration enforce a negative attitude towards LGBTQ individuals. Although there are a few scenarios of where a positive attitude is enforced, majority of them were negative. It’s important to acknowledge the message the teachers and admin send to the students. Although Canada is known for its multiculturalism and that’s seen as a positive thing; it has its negative aspects. The beliefs and values that come with every different culture adds to the negative impact it has on LGBTQ individuals. Some cultures see it as a something that’s forbidden and is illegal in their home country. These different perspective add to the discrimination towards those who are homosexual and transsexual. The negative impact that Canada’s multicultural society is a very big part of the discrimination those who are a part of
