Voting Is Sexy Advertisement Analysis

Democracy requires participation. It is the cornerstone of our government. Thomas Jefferson once said “We in America do not have government by the majority, we have government by the majority who participate”. Voting is the most important and fundamental form of participation that a citizen undertakes in a democratic government. In 2004 AGIA commissioned a series of get out and vote posters and advertisements to remind voters of this responsibility. One advertisement entitled “Get Out The Vote: Voting Is Sexy” highlights a photograph of a sexy pair of woman’s legs in a voting booth along with typed print expressing the idea that voting is sexy and the viewer of the ad should go out and vote. This advertisement effectively communicates the importance of voting to the young male voter and motivates its target audience to get out and vote by appealing to the target audience’s pathos or emotion.
The “Get Out The Vote: Voting Is Sexy” ad utilizes a sexy picture designed to get the attention of younger males so they can be motivated to get out and participate in the democratic process. Everything in this ad is designed to appeal to the emotion of the viewer in one way or another. The red white and blue vertical stripes of the curtain appeal to the viewer’s sense of patriotism. Voting is not only necessary it is patriotic. If patriotism is sufficient to motivate the target audience then the long curvaceous bare legs uses sex appeal to get the viewer out to vote. Even the color of the shoes in the ad, black and white, seems to be suggestive that it is important for everyone to get out and vote. This is not an African American issue or a white American issue but an issue important to all
