Get Happy By Walter Mosely: My Pursuit Of Happiness

Improved Essays
Get Happy I have to say, I really enjoyed reading this reading because I could connect to every content the author was sharing. The pursuit of happiness is something I agree with the author, Walter Mosely, with and also that the pursuit of happiness is different for everyone. My definition of my pursuit of happiness is, to make a difference in this world and accomplish all of my goals through hard work and no short cuts. I want to live my dreams and stay loyal and work hard every day, until I take my last breath. I may not want to be President of the United States or become a famous celebrity, or become rich, but I’d rather work hard and earn respect and my dreams. That’s my pursuit of happiness, to be known as a hardworking, humble, caring …show more content…
Though I agree with this statement, I do not believe happiness is measured by wealth. Many people don’t ever become very wealthy in their lifetime and still find happiness. But, what I believe is people are blinded and corrupted with our modern day technology and media that they believe happiness is to be wealthy. For example, celebrities who are wealthy present themselves as very happy being famous and owning all of this wealth, and when the public sees this they look up to these celebrities and hope to one day become like them and earn a substantial amount of wealth. With that being said, becoming rich may be someone’s pursuit of happiness, but I don’t believe it’s the definition of the pursuit of happiness. The pursuit of happiness can have many different definitions; I don’t believe there’s one precise definition. Another thing I agree with Walter upon and fell strongly about, is when he says, “We need to concentrate on our own happiness if we expect to make a difference in the careening technological and slovenly evolving social world of the twenty-first century.” (Mosley pg. 684). Today, especially in our society, there are too many people who are more concerned about others and their lives, than they are of

In the story, "Creating your own Happiness" written by, Wayne Coyne, is about a man realizing that happiness isn't about being loved in a situation or feeling lucky but to put yourself first and look at the positive perspective in life. In the story, Wayne mentions he was sitting in a heated car at a stop light and saw a couple huddling outside that seemed like they were freezing but when he saw their faces, they were laughing and smiling. This made him think back to the time when the restaurant he worked at got robbed and the only thing he was thinking about was saving himself. Being in that situation and seeing that couple made him think differently about happiness and how it is a mindset. No matter what the situation is whether its feeling…

True happiness comes from being able to accept oneself and stand up for yourself, not letting other’s thoughts and opinions deter your from what you enjoy. My personal struggle with identity and the pressure to live up to expectations have created divisions in myself that have shaped who I am as a person. In Jonathan Haidt’s The Happiness Hypothesis, he discusses the causes for the way humans act and introduce methods to improve their satisfaction. Would you be more happy being rich and educated in life? Do you believe that your level of happiness is correlated with the amount of success you have? Well Joe Pinsker who wrote the article, ¨Why So Many Smart People Aren't Happy” presents his opinion which is that being successful with numerous accomplishments is not a factor in someone's long term happiness in life. I agree with the author´s mindset because of both the evidence he includes in the article and the personal evidence I have in my own life. The two main reasons why success does not define long term happiness is because of the effects of fame, power, and money as well as the scarcity mindset.…

Barry Schwarts does make a good point by saying that, “Happiness as a byproduct of living” and while I agree with this statement. I do not agree with the rest of the statement, “but happiness as a goal is a recipe for disaster.” I believe that there is nothing wrong for striving for happiness in your life, most people do, but I think the part that becomes detrimental is when you striving for happiness 24/7. At this point you get into this mindset that at every given moment you have to be happy with all the decisions you make, but we all know that is not true. We are humans and make mistakes and if you don’t take into account these errors when striving for happiness, more times than one you are going to be let down.…

In Walter Mosley 's essay, “Get Happy” the author repeats the opening lines of the Declaration of Independence. This technique serves not only as an introduction and a preview of the forthcoming message but also establishes context and reminds the reader of what the phrase actually says. So many people think that our Declaration of Independence ensures Americans of life, liberty and happiness, but in face it is the pursuit of happiness. Mosley believes that in comparison to life and liberty, “our potential for happiness has lagged far behind.”…

Happiness, like beauty, is in the eyes of the beholder. If you ask anyone, what is their ultimate goal in life; the majority may say it is to find happiness. This may appear to be simple enough, yet it seems to be quite complex and elusive to most. This pursuit is seldom, if ever, achieved in one’s lifetime. While it is difficult to answer the question as to whether it is selfish to pursue happiness for oneself, it would be practical to say that it is not.…

Everybody holds different definitions of happiness which people realize through self-reflection. Wealthy people who understand what makes them happy would utilize their money in a way that promotes their happiness, whether it be through buying a plane ticket to spend time with family, “collecting modern art, or…rent[ing] old movies” (Rubin 293). As Gretchen Rubin, author of the blog The Happiness Project, puts it, “Money, spent wisely, can support happiness goals of strengthening relationships, promoting health, having fun, and all the rest” (Rubin 297). This applies to poor people as well in that they can be happy if their definition of happiness is reasonable and achievable.…

The teacher told me, I was wrong and didn't understand the question.…
