Damaris is a 30 year old who is 5’5” and weighs 160lbs with a BMI of 26.7kg/ m2 with gestational diabetes. She was diagnosed wat 24 weeks of gestation. Before conception Damaris weighed 150lb and her BMI was at 25.06kg/ m2 which put her at the overweight status. Her physician had explained the possible risk of going into a pregnancy overweight and the possibility of having gestational diabetes. When she was screened at 24 weeks of conception for gestational diabetes the results of her oral glucose tolerance test was as follow:
Fasting: ≥ 103mg/dL
1hour: ≥ 204mg/dL
2hour: ≥ 172mg/dL
Damaris was told the gestational diabetes can be controlled with diet and exercise and was referred to a dietician in the hospital for a consult. She was advised to follow a meal plan of approximately ____ kcal. Her meal plan consisted of whole grain breads, fruits and vegetables along with high fiber foods. She was told to limit simple sugars found in foods and beverages. Eat 3 full meals and 2 snacks and exercise about 30 minutes a day. At her 36 week checkup her glucose levels were still high her physician recommended she be induced at 38 weeks in order to prevent the baby from growing in size and possibly causing further complications to both her and the baby.
