After having spring break and Easter weekend with my family, the change project has caused us to become much closer. I had the opportunity to spend a lot of time with them and continue to grow out out relationships. My mom is a medical case manager and guardian for clients with all kinds of disabilities. Her clients have all kinds of physical, mental, psychological disorders as well. Anyways, I was brainstorming different topics for my paper with her and she proposed a question that she has always wondered, especially with her clients that have constant psychiatric needs. She has always wondered if different moon phases have an effect of people’s moods and personalities. She has had some very difficult clients and I can always remember her …show more content…
I like that fact that it focuses on experiencing situations rather than just talking about them. I also really like the idea of the empty chair technique because it gives people a chance to speak their mind without being afraid that the person will come back at them. Also, I do like the ideas that it has about dreams. It says that dreams are random firing of the brain put into logic. I understood this very well because dreams are very weird and difficult to understand, but when reading this, I realized that they can all just be random things put into a logical “story” called a dream. Role playing is also very important because it gives a chance to say things that you want to say. It also gives the therapist an idea of how you act in certain situations, which can then give them an idea on where to start. It is not one of my favorite theories, however, there are still some important ideas that I can take away from …show more content…
The fact that everyone has their own theory of things, like the apple during class, is amazing because we were all seeing the exact same thing, but people all had different opinions about it. The implicit theory is very important with this specific topic as well. During class, we did a short test of how optimistic we were. I scored a 19 and the median score is 21. I have always thought of myself as an optimistic person, but certain situations that life has thrown at me have made me less optimistic. I do believe that people who are more optimistic are happier because they focus on the things that could go right instead of focusing on what could go wrong. The only time that I repeatedly notice that I am less optimistic is when I have experienced failure, therefore, if I do the same task sometime in the future, I do not expect the outcome to be much different than the first time. I tend to learn best from my own

If people are optimistic and look for the good in everything, chances are they will get the good in everything, because they chose the ignore the bad. People who choose to see the negative side of things, or are pessimistic, tend to receive the negative aspects or side of things. For example, a person who is positive about all of the studying they did for an upcoming test, will stress less about it, and typically score better than someone who negatively views they’re studying. On the other hand, if someone thinks they did a poor job of studying, they will typically stress about their test, and not score as well. This of course differs among each person, because everyone is different.…

T stated that she was left out by the other parents when she took C to the park and neglected by her own sister. Therefore, T’s neglect made us more mindful of her situation. As a group we discussed what we believe would be the most difficult aspects of living with someone with a mental illness. We came to the conclusion that safety, accountability, and always having to put someone before oneself would be the most difficult aspects. We decided on safety because we felt at any moment something could be said or done to set off a trigger.…

An experiment was conducted to see if thinking optimistically increases how long a person will live. Research proved that thinking optimistically about situations can drastically decrease the chances of dying early (Mindfulness and Positive Thinking). If people just have a positive attitude instead of a negative attitude when facing conflict, then they could be increasing their lifespan. In another experiment the conclusion was made that “Greater optimism predicted greater antibody production and better immune outcomes” (Mindfulness and Positive Thinking). In the long run, having an optimistic personality will make the immune system stronger and the body less likely to become ill.…

A lot of people think just because you’re an identical twin, that you must be the same in every aspect of your life as the other person. In my case, and in others, being an identical twin doesn’t prove that we are the same in all areas of life. I have an identical twin sister, named Emily. Emily is pessimistic, high maintenance and very well organized. I, on the other hand, am more optimistic, open-minded and easygoing.…

On Being a Therapist by Jeffrey Kottler is an educational piece of literature that also happens to be very informative and interesting. In the book, he discusses numerous aspects of being a therapist, ranging from how one decides to engage in this work, how therapists can change clients, how clients can change therapists, to the difficulties and struggles therapists frequently face. As someone who hopes to become a therapist someday, this book was a really incredible way of learning about the profession in a more subjective and ultimately real way. Not all he says is comforting, but his choice to discuss both the good, bad, and in between have given me a more thorough understanding of what I may experience in the future. Throughout this book, Kottler discusses many subjects that have connected…

For example, a teenager dealing with depression may seem like a individual issue on the surface level, but behind that teenager stands a set of parents who are worried about their child. For every husband or wife dealing with anxiety, PTSD, depression, or any other type of mental disorder, there is a loving spouse who is directly impacted by the strain the disorder may have on the individual. Almost anything that someone may be seeking counsel for could have an impact on the overall functioning of the…

The Gestalt exercise is aimed to connect the client to the internal and external focuses within their environment (Corey, 2016, p. 201). In my example of the Gestalt therapy exercise, I discussed what happens around me (field theory), the inseparable whole (holism), experience in the environment (figure-formation process), and keeping my formation (organismic self-regulation. This type of exercise incorporates a mind and body connection with the individual. On the other hand, a somatization is a physical response that happens without a trigger. An example of somatization would be an individual diagnosed with depression.…

It takes a great amount of patience to choose to be optimistic rather than negative, and it takes optimism to teach you to be patient. Sports teams were a great influence in my life and I am so grateful to have been given the opportunity to play on so many different teams because the opportunities taught me to be patient and optimistic, not just in sports, but in life as a whole. Being the individual who is able to spread the positive energy rather than negative gave me a new perspective. I started to see the greater good, not just in a given situation, but also with people. I learned that not everything in life is handed or comes the way you want or expect, and being patient can also lead to a much more pleasant and optimistic future.…

Psychologist Carl Rogers and his colleagues were the first of their time to record, transcribe, and publish their own cases of psychotherapy. One of Roger's main contributions to the counseling field was his person-centered theory. Contrasting Roger's theory is existential psychotherapy, created by Viktor Frankl (a prisoner from a Nazi concentration camp), Rollo May (brought existentialism into the United States), and Irvin Yalom (Seligman et al., 2014). Gestalt therapy had similar attributes to person-centered theory and existential psychotherapy but was mostly different.…

It is the job of the therapist to look at recent incidents and past incidents of disordered communication to detect difficulties and explore alternate and more effective ways of communicating (Robertson, Rushton, Wurm, 2008). Communication analysis often leads on to other techniques such as problem solving and role-play. I think role playing would be beneficial for Alan, to help him problem solve and figure out what is getting in the way of him talking to Lani about his feelings. The therapist and Alan could work out possible scenarios of how he could approach Lani in a respectful way, and convey his feelings to…

When compared to other therapeutic approaches, gestalt therapy is a lot less structured and much more philosophical. Perls (1969) has been quoted saying ‘One of the objections I have against anyone calling himself a gestalt therapist is that he uses a technique, a technique is a gimmick’ This being said gestalt therapists are encouraged to create their own means of assisting the client towards experiencing awareness and meaningful contact with the self and others. One of the exercises that may be used for a client in gestalt therapy is the exaggeration exercise. The aim in this exercise is for the client is to become more aware of the subtle cues and signals they are sending through their own body language. The person is asked to exaggerate…
