Gertrudis De La Garza, known for her monumental work as mother and general in the revolutionary army, died on Saturday, March 6th in her home town of Nogales. She was 42.
Gertrudis died from complications of Spanish Influenza, said husband Juan Alejandrez.
Growing up on the family farm in Guaymas, Mexico, Gertrudis always was one to stand out in the family. From her exuberant rhythm, movement, and love of music she truly made an occasion one to remember. Rosaura, her eldest sister, recalls “Her dancing left a room speechless, in awe of her perfect rhythm. I remember the way she would fling herself into a polka and captivate the room with her graceful talent. She had a way with music that none of our family ever did.”
