Throughout the play Gertrude is known as an ignorant character because she is not aware of everything that is happening. She is not aware that Old Hamlets murder was by his own brother Claudius, her now husband. When Hamlet finally makes her see the error in her choice of marrying Claudius his words make her feel guilty "O hamlet speak no more, thou turn'st mine eyes into my very soul". Hamlet tells her that he is only putting on his antic-disposition, she lies to Claudius when he ask how Hamlet is "Mad as the sea and wind".
Gertrude is essentially Hamlets cause of rage, her hasty marriage to Claudius and for not mourning Old Hamlets death contribute to his rage "Stew'd in corruption, honeying and making love over the nasty sty". Gertrude helps build Hamlets personality. Her actions help Hamlet with his need to kill Claudius. Gertrude is essentially Hamlets shield. If Gertrude was not Hamlets mother or royalty, then Hamlet would more then likely be sent away or killed. Gertrude is a strong character in the play and affects the plot of the play.
Gertrude plays a passive part in the play, She is not assertive. She does not seem to have a say over what happens to her and she only causes more issues then she prevents i.e Hamlets rage.
Gertrude s innocence or guilt in Old Hamlets death is not exactly an issue in the play. Hamlet has an impact on how we judge Gertrude. Hamlet sees his mother as a "sensual" character yet the relationship we see between Gertrude and Claudius is domestic.
In conclusion Gertrude can either be seen as Claudius' co-conspirator or Hamlets defender in the
