Before the second scene, it is evident that King Hamlet and Gertrude loved each other and even Hamlet said the same (Shakespeare 1.2.143-144). However, to Hamlet’s dismay, the death of his father showed a side of his mother he had not seen before when she married Claudius, her husband’s brother, barely two months after the loss which was betrayal far from what he ever imagined. As if not enough, Gertrude’s lack of empathy in during her son’s time of grief caused a divide between Gertrude and Claudius, and Hamlet. It was very relevant and useful in the film to help the audience to identify more closely with the emotions, events, and characters in the movie. Additionally, the retention of the theme of betrayal in a new manner made more sense in the current age of corporate warfare where people seek control over companies and financial assets than they do about countries and colonies. Therefore, decision of the director concerning the artistic changes to the original text enhanced the story’s ability to convey the message of betrayal while adding to its entertainment
