Germany's Response To Ww1

Improved Essays
In early 1915, Germany had a policy of unrestricted submarine warfare which meant they could torpedo and sink armed merchant ships but not passenger ships. They broke this policy on march 24th 1916 by attacking a French cross-channel passenger ferry called the Sussex. 50 people died and even though no US citizens were killed, the attack caused president Woodrow Wilson to declare that if Germany continued with this behavior, the US would break diplomatic relations with them. In 1915, the first American merchant ship was sunk due to German aggression. The William P. Frye was attacked off the coast of Brazil on January 28th by a German cruiser which made the US angry.

On May 4, 1916, Germany tried to win over the US by proposing the Sussex Pledge.

Not only did Germany disregard neutrality, but it refused to comply with international laws requiring attackers to issue a warning before firing and allowing people onboard to evacuate. The sinking of the Lusitania, a passenger ship, escalated the tension between Germany and the United States, leading Wilson to redefine neutrality as the indisputable right of neutral nations to trade and travel without interference. Although American-German relations were strained, Germany issued a pledge to halt unrestricted submarine warfare to appease the U.S. and prevent them from joining the war. Despite this, Wilson’s policy of neutrality ultimately failed because it was based on the cooperation of Germany. In early 1917, Germany decided to resume unrestricted submarine warfare.…

Instead Germany proclaimed the waters around Britain to be an unrestricted U-boat zone, and any ships that would enter that zone, they will torpedo. Thus, Germany took out newspaper notices in neutral countries like America, to warn them not to enter this zone. In the beginning a few American ships were attacked, including the wheat transport William P. Frye and the tanker the Gulflight. While Wilson wanted to hold Germany accountably for their actions, Bryan argued that American ships were aware of the risks they were taking by entering a war zone, so they must take responsibility for their actions.…

In Professor Suri's lecture on the Great War and progressives, we discussed the failure of American neutrality, German submarine warfare, and the U.S. declaration of war. In the period of World War I, America was committed to being a country with "neutral" trade relations in Europe. Despite the unrest in Europe, America was dedicated to being neutral in this sense, but they failed to after Britain decided that the U.S. couldn't trade with its enemy. As a result of this sentiment, Britain blockaded U.S. trade to Germany in 1914. With German submarine warfare, Germany decided that it needed to somehow stop American ships from going into Britain, so they decided to sink U.S. and British ships - if they could not obtain goods, nobody could.…
