The country of Germany today is a country all others look towards in the tense political climate we have today. Now it is a country people love and foreign leaders often adopt German policies to implicate into their own countries to hopefully proper like Germany. However, Germany hasn’t always been the great country it is today, in fact it used to be one of the most dreaded countries out there but over the last several decades Germany turned itself around to be a somewhat role model to others. One specific concern that Germany is getting its praise for is its stance on closing the gender income gap the world faces. Throughout history, women have always earned lesser income than that of a man all around the globe, including Germany, but with more progressive politics, closing this gap is becoming a world wide effort. Germany has been a proponent of equal pay since the mid-20th century along with many countries in the EU because we acknowledge the concern and discrimination women can, and do, face when they are earning less. This is a national issue to Germany as it is an international issue to the rest of the world. This income disparity is an issue that should be a top priority. The UN has had several conventions over the last few decades such as the “Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women” which commits states to make sure all measures are taken to eliminate discrimination of women in the work place, which is a leading cause of the large wage gap we are experiencing (Women and the economy ). We would very much like to see several other countries ratify this and other conventions like this to begin the step in the right direction towards universal
